One of the items on sell at Sam’s Club Hawaii is Rubber Mulch, made from 100% recycled tires.
“It’s a mulch made from recycled tires – tires from Sam’s Club’s auto, TreadHunter and lube shop that, in the past, would have been be carted away. Now Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club have eliminated that cost, and turned it into a revenue center by selling the old tires to a company that turns them into what Wal-Mart says is a non-toxic, latex-free mulch that can be used for playgrounds, pools, pond areas or gardens.” ( http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/16/news/companies/gunther_walmart.fortune/)
The Rubber Mulch is made by a company called Liberty Tire Recycling.
“Scrap tires collected by Liberty Tire Recycling are processed and refined by size-reduction techniques designed to achieve a range of particle sizes as small as 600 microns. Various mesh sizes of crumb rubber become the ideal raw material for a wide variety of applications, including molded rubber goods and adhesives. By reclaiming more than 33 percent of the nation’s discarded tires, Liberty Tire annually transforms more than 110 million tires into raw materials.” (http://www.libertytire.com/AboutUs.aspx)
“With innovative tools, technologies and processes, Liberty Tire is a revolutionary American conservation enterprise – from coast to coast, and from whole tire to end product. The company’s commitment to finding new and better ways to RECLAIM, RECYCLE and REUSE bridges the sustainability goals of scrap tire generators nationwide with those of local scrap rubber consumers.” (http://www.libertytire.com/AboutUs.aspx)
Liberty Tire Recycling is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA.
