A new surfing themed resort is slated to open on West O’ahu in 2017

10498469_10152217257186861_2764624513182028240_oHONOLULU —A new surfing themed resort slated to open on West O’ahu in 2017 will have Hawaii’s first four-acre artificial wave pool.

American Wave Machines out of San Diego is responsible for the new technology.

The waves will be produced by underwater air chambers which create the force for a consistent, on-demand swell.

The resort has partnered with Bruce Brown Films and themed after the most iconic of all surfing films. The plans for The Endless Summer Resort contain 400 units, luxury amenities plus a surf museum. Surfers stand to benefit even if they never step foot on the property.

Local surfers are intrigued by the prospect of a new break. Some believe that the surf resort may give inexperienced surfers a chance to safely learn the sport and be more ready to tackle Hawaii’s powerful surf.

“It could be good for people to practice; you know out here it can be very dangerous, people get injured, the reef is very sharp,” said Thor Dyrensborg.

Wave heights can be adjusted from knee high for beginners to close to 8 feet for the more experienced.

Guests not staying on property will be able to surf the artificial waves for a fee. Several locations on West Oahu are being considered but no final location has been determined.

Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection Sues Local Appliance Repair Company

Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection Sues Local Appliance Repair Company

HONOLULU – The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ (DCCA) Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) is suing an appliance company for allegedly scamming Hawaii consumers out of thousands for unperformed repairs.

The lawsuit was filed August 17, 2015 in the First Circuit Court of the State of Hawaii.

OCP Executive Director Stephen Levins says Shane Mulleitner, who owns and operates Shane’s Appliance, allegedly took thousands of dollars from Hawaii consumers without performing repair services that were promised or agreed upon. Mulleitner operates out of a van and offers his repair services throughout Oahu.

OCP is seeking both an injunction that will prevent Mulleitner from further violating Hawaii law and an order requiring that he return all monies collected from consumers for unperformed or unwarranted repairs. OCP is also seeking civil penalties.

“Mr. Mulleitner repeatedly didn’t live up to his word. He took money upfront and failed to perform the work, which he said he was going to do,” said Levins. “This kind of conduct should never be tolerated.  If someone says that they are going to repair something, they shouldn’t misrepresent their intentions.”

OCP encourages consumers to check out a business before calling them for home repairs and urges everyone to be especially cautious if a repairman demands payment upfront, prior to performing any services.

To check out a business online, and to research complaints history visit: businesscheck.hawaii.gov.

Consumers with complaints against Mulleitner, Shane’s Appliance can call OCP at 587-4272, or file online at: cca.hawaii.gov/ocp/consumer-complaint/.
