Nanakuli Turning Lanes Project: Nighttime Eastbound Lane Closures Starting 2/16/16

Aloha Senator Shimabukuro, Rep Jordan, Rep Tupola, and Council Member Pine:

Thank you for your questions, comments, and support as the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) continues to make progress on the Farrington Highway Intersection Improvements project in Nanakuli. Please find an update of the project below.

The project has been delayed for several months as we have run into unforeseen conditions with underground utility lines that were not part of the as built or construction plans.  These unforeseen utilities has resulted in frequent work stoppage, re-assessment of the plans, re-design by our engineers, and approval of the revised design by appropriate agencies before construction work could resume on the road. During these times, the contractor has been working on improvements behind the barriers that do not involve utility line work, to the extent possible,

We have received DPP approval of the updated design revisions, and on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016 the finalized drawings were sent to DPP for their signature. Daytime construction work will continue behind the barriers this week.  Nighttime eastbound lane closures for the installation of a sewer line will resume on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016.  We will release the lane closure details to the media in addition to  posting them on our social media channels and to our website at  Electronic message boards will be placed in advance of the project site to alert the community of the lane closures as well.

The updated project schedule targets a completion date of April 2017.  However, we are working with the contractor to reduce the schedule length.  The contractor has also scheduled in regular refreshing of the lane lines and reflectors throughout the project site to ensure visibility.

HDOT thanks you and your constituents for your patience and understanding as we advance this project.  Please feel free to call or email me should you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
