In my meeting yesterday with the City and HART officials, we further discussed what will be happening with the crosswalks and bus stops at Sack N Save, along Farrington Hwy. in Nanakuli. For those of you who did not get this information at Tuesday’s Waianae Neighborhood Board meeting, here’s the recap:
Three options were discussed to address this crosswalk and bus stop location. As the State DOT moves forward with the contraflow project, this was flagged as the right time to …also fix this intersection. The options discussed were:
1. eliminate both Mauka and Makai bus stops at Sack N Save
2. eliminate the Makai bus stop, and relocate the Mauka bus stop to Lualualei Naval Rd. intersection so pedestrians would have a traffic light to cross at
3. relocate the Mauka bus stop to Lualualei Naval Rd. intersection. Combine the KFC and Sack N Save bus stops into one stop and locate them Makai at the Lualualei Naval Rd. intersection so pedestrians would have a traffic light to cross at
After discussions with Mr. Langford (Chair, Nanakuli Neighborhood Board Transportation Committee), City and Bus officials, OPTION 3 was chosen as the best choice.
Signs and flyers will be posted when they begin the process of moving the bus stops further west to Lualualei Naval Rd. intersection, and hopes are that this will make a much safer road crossing for all pedestrians who utilize these stops.
Additionally, there will be new traffic cameras installed at 4 Nanakuli intersections: Nanakuli Ave., Piliokahi Ave., Haleakala Ave., and Helelua St.
Thank you to the City for finally hearing our worries with the fatalities and accidents that this bus stop location has caused in recent years!
